Overview of the Employees State Insurance Scheme

The Employees State Insurance (ESI) Scheme is administered by the Employees' State Insurance Corporation, operating under the ESI Act of 1948. It encompasses various establishments such as factories, road transport, hotels, restaurants, cinemas, newspapers, shops, and educational/medical institutions.

The scheme applies to establishments with 10 or more workers (or 20 or more in certain states) who earn a salary or wages up to Rs. 21,000 per month. Additionally, workers deployed on construction sites within ESI Scheme areas have been covered since August 1, 2015.

Contributions Under the ESI Scheme

Employers are required to contribute 4.75% of wages, while employees contribute 1.75%. However, employees earning less than Rs. 137 per day as daily wages are exempt from contributing, though employers must still contribute their share on behalf of these employees.
