Overview of FSSAI Registration

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) oversees the regulation of food businesses in India. Before commencing operations, all manufacturers, marketing companies, or sellers packaging food products must obtain a 14-digit registration or license number from FSSAI, which is mandatory to display on food packages.

This regulatory measure by the government aims to ensure that food products undergo stringent quality checks, thereby reducing instances of adulteration and the distribution of substandard products. Additionally, it enhances accountability among manufacturers.

Types of FSSAI Registration Based on Turnover

FSSAI offers three types of registrations depending on the turnover of the business:

• 1. FSSAI Basic Registration
  • This category is tailored for small businesses or startups with an annual turnover below Rs.12 lakhs. Basic registration allows for scalability, as businesses can upgrade to a state license with an increase in sales volume.
• 2. FSSAI State License
  • Designed for mid-sized companies with an annual turnover ranging from Rs.12-20 crores, the state license provides comprehensive compliance for operations within a specific state.
• 3. FSSAI Central License
  • Reserved for large-scale enterprises with an annual turnover exceeding Rs.20 crores, the central license is essential for businesses involved in supplying to government offices, engaging in import/export activities of food products, or operating across multiple states.
